About Eltham

Eltham is in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, south east London. It has good transport to central London and is close to Greenwich and the Kent countryside.

Its main shopping area is the High Street, with diverse shops - the usual Boots, Marks & Spencer, Next type shops but also many independent retailers. There are several smaller local shopping areas serving their communities.

Apart from an abundance of green space, Eltham abounds with history - Eltham Palace, favourite home of Henry VIII and run by English Heritage, is just off Eltham High Street, with Well Hall Pleasaunce and the Tudor Barn, just down the road and close to Eltham Station. This was once owned by the Roper family (Sir William Roper was married to Margaret, daughter of Sir Thomas More), more recently lived in by Edith Nesbit and where she wrote The Railway Children.

A few of the famous names associated with Eltham are Bob Hope (he was born here, and our theatre is called "The Bob Hope Theatre"), Boy George who went to school here, Kate Bush bought a house here in the 1980s, Billy Bonds grew up here, Dennis Healy lived in The Eltham Hutments .... the list could go on.

Explore our Eltham community website - if you live here, check out the wealth of shops and activities going on here. Make sure that your club or event is listed here - if not, list them!
